Writing in the genre historical fiction, I am near to completing two books of a trilogy, a story about ordinary people touched by extraordinary events.
Set in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries against the backdrop of The White Cliffs of Dover, it tells the interlinked stories of Sarah’s quest to uncover the mystery of her past, and the tragic life of Elizabeth, the mother she has never known. Dover, 1875 to 1904: a mother and daughter who never know each other, an abusive husband and father, and a search for the truth. Estranged from her hostile father and raised by a strict benefactress after her mother’s death in childbirth, Sarah leads a life rich in material wealth and devoid of love. She craves a family of her own to give her a sense of belonging and rejects her comfortable existence to marry a dockworker and raise two daughters. Despite hardship, loss, and the constraints of poverty, the family bonds stay strong. But Sarah will never feel complete until she uncovers the dark secret surrounding her birth. The tragic story of Sarah’s mother, Elizabeth, plays out in parallel, illuminating for the reader pieces of the puzzle unknown to Sarah. The full picture emerges in the final chapters, when Sarah receives her mother’s deathbed letter, hidden for over twenty years, and finally discovers who she really is. With a unique cliffside setting, this dual protagonist novel explores the power of motherhood, the ugliness of domestic abuse, the corrosiveness of family secrets, and the healing nature of truth. It will appeal to saga fans everywhere. The second book, Shakespeare Cliff, continues the narrative from 1914. Sarah and some of the other characters from the first book reappear, along with a few new ones. WW1 plays a significant role in this story. To read the beginning of the story click the tab WRITING.
